Established:
The GCX was established as a commodity exchange in 2018.
The Ghana Commodity Exchange is a private company limited by shares, structured as a Public Private Partnership, with the government of Ghana currently the sole shareholder. The aim of the exchange is to establish linkages between agricultural and commodity producers and buyers, to secure competitive prices for their products, assuring the market quantity and quality as well as timely settlement of their trade.

Objectives

  • To provide liquid, efficient markets for instruments demanded by our participants, such as auctions, spot, forward, futures and options; 
  • To support access to finance through efficient linkages to commodity finance along the value chain and throughout the transaction cycle;
  • To build the capacity of our members to enable them to use our infrastructure.
  • To establish a fair and transparent price discovery mechanism.
  • To provide a rigorous surveillance system that protect the integrity of our trade.
  • To develop standards, contracts, and dispute mechanisms to reduce the risk of our members.
  • To establish a reliable, efficient, and guaranteed clearing & settlement system.

TYPES OF MEMBERSHIP

GCX MEMBERSHIP TYPES – For Spot Commodity Contracts

TRADING MEMBER (TM)

  • Can buy and sell all commodities for self only
  • Can settle all commodities for self only

 

BROKER MEMBER (BM)

  • Can buy and sell all commodities for self and other exchange members and non-members (clients)
  • Can settle all commodities for self and others

 

ASSOCIATE MEMBER (AS)

  • Special membership for small holder famers and traders
  • Can buy or sell for self only two non-complex commodities (Maize, Rice, Soya, Millet, Sorghum)
  • Can settle commodities for self only
  • Trading right for twelve (12) months only after which upgraded to TM or BM

 

INSTITUTIONAL MEMBER (IM)

  • Special membership for non-commercial organization providing services to GCX (e.g. WFP, NAFCO, GGC, MoFA etc)
  • Can buy or sell all commodities for self only
  • Can settle commodities for self only

 

FINANCIAL INSTITUTIONAL MEMBER (FIM)

  • Special membership for Financial Institutions providing financial services
  • Cannot buy or sell commodities on the exchange by self
  • Cannot settle commodities for self on the exchange
  • Can only buy/sell commodities through BM

GCX WAREHOUSE SERVICES

  1. Cleaning

  3. Standardization of commodities (Grading)

GCX FINANCIAL SERVICES

  1. Warehouse Receipt Financing-We work with partner financial institutions to provide short-term working capital for our Small holder farmers and FBO’s using their warehouse receipt as sole collateral.
  2. Aggregation Financing-Brokers or aggregators are supported by our partner financial institutions to obtain funds to aggregate commodities into the GCX warehouses.
  3. Settlement services-We leverage the Payments platforms by partner banks and GHiPSS to settle all farmers within 24hours after trade.
